Underworld
Slim is back!
September
29, 2007
The competitive level of
wiffleball has been rising exponentially in the last few years.
The amount of players that could throw considerably hard has increased
fivefold. Just a few years ago, sinkers used to be a pitch that
95% of the hitters had little chance against; now changeups had
to be introduced because handfuls of hitters are keying in so
well on tough pitches. The field of 32 teams we have this year
is not nearly as watered down as it was in 2005 and 2006.
The handicapping of the NCT needs to be
treated like the NCAA March Madness tournament. The challenge
presented to each team is to parlay 5 (4 if the team earns a first
round bye) consecutive sudden death victories, which will be compounded
by the fact that by the 2nd or 3rd elimination game, each team
remaining is likely to have an ace capable of shutting out any
lineup they face. The odds must reflect these obstacles. As far
as the individual teams are concerned, 2007 regular season performance
has been taken into account, along with success in past NCTs,
and any acquisitions, losses, or matchups that would help or hinder
the squads in Texas. Odds will be represented in sportsbook, not
racebook style: +750 means 7.5 to 1, +1100 means 11 to 1. Full

Previews
& Predictions by Chris Moncrief

September 29, 2007
The Fast Plastic National
Championship Tournament of 2007 boasts the best teams that the
wiffle world has to offer. That’s right, a “melting
pot” of bizarre humanity is about to descend upon Cedar
Park, Texas. This venue is one of few that will host overweight
rednecks, loud-mouthed Yankees, obnoxious left coasters, prepubescent
boys, and old men in denial. With such an array of talent, age,
personality, and legal status, many observations and questions
come to mind. Full

Why
Do We Play The Game? |
The
Butterflies
September 29, 2007
Much has been written over
the past few years about why each of us play this great game.
Whether it's for competition, camaraderie, payouts, or just good
fun, there is a reason for 32 teams getting ready to embark on
a trip to Cedar Park.
My first time at the National Championship
Tournament was an eye-opening experience. At first it was a solid
excuse to get a way for a weekend with the boys to drink a few,
laugh some, and play some wiffle.
However, I was shocked at what I found.
A truly competitive atmosphere with some
amazing battles all around. You could feel the electricity in
the air as the sun went down and the surviving teams were now
battling under the lights. Ever since that first trip to Nationals,
a hunger was born for the competition, the battles, the teamwork,
the confrontations that only Fast Plastic Nationals can truly
satisfy.
It is a Grand Stage even if the only audience
we have is each other. The butterflies that I get while driving
in to Cedar Park for some pre-tourney batting practice on Friday
afternoon after the flights, meet and exceed the same butterflies
I had playing in a baseball College World Series.
They are anticipation butterflies that
are wondering how the unscripted drama will play out. Who will
we play? What's the draw? Have we faced them before? Who will
pitch? Questions, butterflies, questions. For the next week, the
butterflies will continue to grow and intensify. So be prepared
for a great time. Soak it all in.
As for the winner: no predictions from
this writer -I don't want that Karma either way. So, why do we
play the game: I play for the butterflies!

FP
Championship Series from 2003 to date
September
29, 2007
The 2002 Glendale Wiffleball
World Series concluded with the Dream Police taking the title,
at the same time Jim Balian was in Florida with the Vipers winning
the Fast Plastic National championship. A year later and many
incredible games later our team with Jim Balian added in managed
to shock the world and take the 2003 national championship. It
was the first year that fp adopted a tournament style of finish
for their season.

But
It's Not What You Think
September 29, 2007
I thought about this for
quite some time before finally giving in and doing the dirty deed
off picking this year's top finalists. Oh, wait, are you looking
in expecting to see which teams I believe have the best chance
to win this year's NCT. Well, sorry to say, that's not what this
write-up will cover. Nope. I'm talking rules, and FP's rulebook
to be exact. Each year, Bruce and I spend countless hours discussing
rules, game situations, scenarios, possible loop holes, scams,
flaws, whatever you can think of when it comes to the FP rulebook.
This year was no different. Full
